Wednesday Tuesday is my night to cook dinner. But it is also a weekly opportunity for me to share some fantastic drivel—things you didn’t care you didn’t know—with you, dear reader.
October 1 is World Vegetarian Day. It is also the birthday of the People’s Republic of China, as proclaimed by Mao Zedong from atop Tiananmen (October 1, 1949).
I’ve written a good deal about the Chairman in the Zoo World 3 series. I encourage you to check it out.
Regarding what to cook on October 1: I went with a vegetarian fried rice called Foreign Devil Fried Rice.

exotic ingredients
getting oriented
Following the recipe required a trip to the Pacific Ocean Marketplace to procure some of the exotic ingredients. They had lots of really cool stuff there, and only some of it was labelled in English. I took pictures of the massive jackfruit and the preserved duck eggs. Didn’t bring any home, however.
I did get dried bean curd, shredded black fungus, black mushrooms, preserved salted black beans, and some really big carrots. Here’s a photo of the ingredients I did bring home.
I pin photos of my Wednesday culinary creations to my Pinterest board, Another Wednesday Dinner. You can see other dishes I’ve made there, but you can only get the backstory right here, on fantasticdrivel. Thanks for reading!
