Cutlar’s Bane: artist’s rendition of Lyman Cutlar and the creature that uprooted his potatoes and his dreams

There are, apparently, no photographs of Lyman Cutlar, the crack-shot frontiersman who sought out a new life on San Juan island in 1859. No, he certainly wasn’t the “King of the Wild Frontier,” but he and Davy Crockett had plenty in common. For my artist’s rendition of Cutlar, I went with a still from “The Alamo” (2004) where Billy Bob Thornton played the part of Davy Crockett.
